Welding might be the most measurable trade there is. You either passed the 6G test or you did not. You either run TIG on stainless or you do not. So it is genuinely maddening to send out a resume full of hard-earned certs and hear nothing back, while the shop down the road complains it cannot find welders. Most of the time, the problem is not your qualifications. It is that your qualifications are written in paragraph form, buried where neither software nor a skimming shop manager can find them.
Good news: a welder resume is one of the easiest resumes in the world to fix, because almost everything on it can be a hard fact. Processes, positions, codes, materials, thicknesses. No fluff required, and no fluff wanted.
Why is a welder resume different from an office resume?
Office resumes sell judgment and soft skills, which are hard to verify. A welding resume sells testable, certifiable facts. That changes the writing job completely.
A shop manager or a recruiter at a fabricator scans for:
- Processes: GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), SMAW (stick), FCAW (flux-core), submerged arc
- Positions: 1G through 4G groove, 1F through 4F fillet, 5G and 6G pipe
- Codes and certs: AWS D1.1, D1.2, D1.6, ASME Section IX, API 1104
- Materials: carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, and the thickness ranges you run
- Context: structural, pipe, pressure vessels, shipbuilding, fab shop, field work
Applicant tracking systems at large employers search for these exact strings, and humans skim for them. If your resume says "performed various welding duties on assorted projects," you have hidden every fact that matters inside a sentence that matches nothing. The same failure pattern hits every trade (an electrician's license line can vanish into a header the same way), but welders have the most to lose because their credentials are the most specific.
How exactly should you list welding certifications?
Give certifications their own section, high on the page, with the heading Certifications. One cert per line, full detail, no prose:
- AWS D1.1 Structural Steel, GMAW, 3G and 4G, tested Mar 2027 (current)
- AWS D1.1 Structural Steel, FCAW, 3G, tested Mar 2027 (current)
- ASME Section IX, GTAW, carbon steel pipe, 6G, tested 2026 (current)
- OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety, 2025
- Forklift and overhead crane operator cards, current
Each line carries the body, the code, the process, the position, and the date, because that combination is what postings specify and what software matches. "AWS certified welder" alone is nearly useless; certified to what code, in what process, in what position? Details are the credential. Parsing systems treat this section as structured data, and it pays to understand how ATS software reads certifications: plain text lines with consistent formatting survive; badges, images of your cert cards, and decorative tables do not.
The lapsed-cert question. Certs expire, and welders know continuity rules vary. Handle it with plain honesty:
- Current cert: mark it current with the test date.
- Lapsed cert: "AWS D1.1, SMAW, 3G, tested 2023, renewal in progress" or "lapsed, retest available on request."
Most serious employers weld-test you on site regardless. A lapsed cert with real hours behind it invites a test. A falsely current cert ends the conversation permanently once paperwork is checked, and in welding, paperwork always gets checked.
Should you write MIG or GMAW? (Both.)
Job postings are inconsistent. One fabricator writes "TIG welders needed," another writes "GTAW experience required," and the keyword match is literal on both sides. So your resume should contain each process you run in both dialects at least once.
The cleanest way is a Processes and Materials block:
- Processes: GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), SMAW (stick), FCAW (flux-core)
- Positions: all groove positions 1G to 4G; pipe 5G and 6G (GTAW root, SMAW fill and cap)
- Materials: carbon steel 16 ga to 1 in, stainless 304/316, aluminum 5052/6061
- Other: blueprint and WPS reading, fit-up, oxy-fuel and plasma cutting, grinding and prep, tape and visual inspection to acceptance criteria
Every line is searchable, scannable in three seconds, and verifiable on a test plate. That is the entire aesthetic of a good welder resume: it reads like a spec sheet, not a cover letter. Only list what you can run on demand. If your aluminum TIG is two weekends of practice, either leave it off or label it truthfully: "aluminum GTAW: practice experience, not production." A shop will happily train an honest welder. Nobody trains the person who claimed 6G and failed the bend test on day one.
How do you describe welding jobs without burying the facts?
Keep the experience section short and concrete. The certs and process block above carry your qualifications; the job history proves where you used them. Two to four bullets per job:
Structural fab shop example:
- Fabricated and welded structural steel assemblies (beams, columns, embeds) to AWS D1.1 using FCAW and GMAW
- Worked from blueprints and WPS; held fit-up tolerances and passed in-house QC and third-party visual inspection
- Ran a consistent 40 to 50 hours weekly in a production environment; zero lost-time incidents
Pipe example:
- Welded carbon and stainless pipe (2 in to 12 in, schedule 40 to 80) to ASME IX, GTAW root with SMAW fill and cap
- Passed x-ray inspection on production welds; repaired flagged joints
- Field work on live industrial sites under permit systems (hot work, confined space)
Facts you know cold, stated plainly: codes, sizes, inspection types, environments. If a weld inspector reading the line would nod, it is written right. Skip invented percentages ("99.2% pass rate") unless your shop genuinely tracked repair rates and you know yours. "Passed x-ray on production welds" is strong and defensible on its own.
What formatting rules protect all this data?
You built a resume out of clean data; do not let a template destroy it in transit:
- One column, plain text, standard headings (Certifications, Processes and Materials, Experience, Education)
- No tables, no images, no cert-card photos, no watermark backgrounds
- Contact info in the document body, not the header
- Save as .docx or a text-based PDF; if you are unsure which, the file format rules for ATS are worth two minutes
- One page for most welders; two if you have long project or travel history
If you travel for shutdowns and turnarounds, add a line about availability ("available for travel and per diem work nationwide"), since staffing recruiters filter on it.
Make sure nothing you earned gets lost in parsing
